School of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering


The history of the School of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering can be traced back to the Department of Biochemistry established by Ningbo Teachers College in 1956 (later the Department of Chemistry of Ningbo Teachers College); in October 1996, the Department of Chemistry of Ningbo University was established when the "three schools merged"; 2000 In May, he merged with mathematics and physics to form the Faculty of Science of Ningbo University, and became the Department of Chemistry. In December 2005, the Department of Chemistry was independent from the Faculty of Science and established the School of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering.



The college has three grassroots teaching organizations: the Department of Chemistry, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and the Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology. There are six research institutions: the Institute of Pharmaceutical and Biological Materials, the Institute of Energy Materials and Industrial Catalysis, the Institute of Inorganic Materials, the Institute of Polymer Materials, the Institute of Advanced Separation and Catalytic Materials, and the Institute of Mass Spectrometry Technology and Applications. There are currently 3 undergraduate majors, 1 first level master's degree program, 1 professional master's degree program, and 1 second level doctoral program; Both chemistry and materials science disciplines have entered the top 1% of the global ESI rankings; 1 provincial key first level discipline (Materials Science and Engineering); One municipal top priority discipline (Materials Science and Engineering) and one municipal key discipline (Physical Chemistry); Chemistry, Materials Science, and Engineering are all national first-class undergraduate majors. It has the cultivation base of State Key Laboratory of new functional materials and their preparation science jointly built by the province and ministry, the key laboratory of advanced mass spectrometry technology and molecular detection in Zhejiang Province, and has been approved as one experimental teaching demonstration center in Zhejiang Province. Mainly engaged in talent cultivation, scientific research, and social services in fields such as materials science, chemical engineering, and chemistry.


From 2018 to 2022, the college presided over and undertook 504 projects of all levels and types, with a total budget of 155.67819 million yuan. More than 300 invention patents. Received 3 national key research and development plan projects and 2 joint fund projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Published over 1200 academic papers in authoritative academic journals and important academic conferences both domestically and internationally, including over 1000 high-quality papers; The per capita number of high-quality papers and TOP journal papers published is among the top in the school, with high-quality papers accounting for about 20% of the school's papers.

The college has extensive and close contacts and exchanges with peers both domestically and internationally, as well as with well-known universities and research institutions both domestically and internationally, such as the California Institute of Technology, Akron University, and the Ningbo Institute of Materials Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It has conducted joint talent cultivation and academic cooperation and exchanges in multiple fields. The college actively organizes and holds large-scale international conferences, and teachers actively participate in various domestic and international academic conferences in their respective fields.

The college attaches great importance to the quality education and innovation ability cultivation of students, and strives to promote a diligent and innovative learning style. On the basis of fully implementing the mentor system, we will build a "blue talent" student training system, fully promote the science and innovation education system, and strengthen the cultivation of students' practical, scientific research, and organizational management abilities. In the past three years, students have made breakthroughs in national innovation and entrepreneurship competitions: they have won two gold prizes, one silver prize and one bronze prize in the "Internet plus" national competition; 1 first prize in the national competition for extracurricular academic works by college students, 1 progressive innovation award for basic research (only 6 nationwide), and 1 second prize; One silver award was awarded in the National "Challenge Cup" Entrepreneurship Plan Competition, and more than 20 provincial-level awards were awarded. Undergraduate students of the college have published over 110 professional papers as the first author in SCI core journals, successfully applied for more than 80 patents, and the number of papers published ranks among the top in the school.
